Definitions


  • Mode: The method of delivery and reception of a text.
  • Higher order question: Take exploration.
  • Lower order question: Have straightforward answers.
  • Prescriptive Grammar: The idea that there is a correct way of using grammar and if the rules aren't followed, it is wrong.
  • Descriptive Grammar: Rules were created simply by observations but the language came first. It is changing.
  • Formal: Proper spelling, no abbreviations, sophisticated lexis and Standard English.
  • Informal: Colloquialisms and grammatical rules aren't followed. 
  • Colloquialisms: A word or phrase used in plain speech but rarely found in formal writing.
  • Slang: Not considered to be used by the educated or the elite. 
  • Phoneme: The smallest unit of sound in language.
  • Syllable: A unit of pronunciation, generally has one vowel sound. 
  • Syllable Nucleus: Vowel.
  • Initial/Final Margins: Consonant.
  • Monosyllabic: One syllable. 
  • Polysyllabic: Many syllables. 
  • Graphology: The study of visual elements. 
  • Typeface: Correct word for 'font'.
  • Deviant Spelling: Spelling something wrong on purpose. 
  • Logographic: One character is one word. 
  • Emoji: Picture character. 
  • Paralinguistics: Elements which add meaning to a text but aren't actually language.
